Video Games

I have always been into strategy games. The critical thinking, the self-improvement, the competition. In this blog I will primarily focus on Strategy games; providing guides, favorites, reviews, and news. However, there are a few random games I like to play outside of the Strategy genre that I will share with you all.

Want to get into Strategy Games? Here are the biggest categories in the genre:

1. Real-Time Strategy (RTS):

  • Players manage resources, build bases, and control armies in real-time. They make decisions on the fly and need to adapt to changing situations.

    • Examples: StarCraft, Age of Empires, Warcraft series.

2. Turn-Based Strategy (TBS):

  • Turn Based strategic decisions, which can include movement, combat, and resource management.

    • Examples: Civilization series, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Heroes of Might and Magic.

3. 4X Games:

  • Stands for "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate." Players build and manage civilizations, explore new territories, manage resources, engage in diplomacy, and battle.

    • Examples: Civilization series, Endless Legend, Stellaris, Age of Wonders I-IV

4. Grand Strategy Games:

  • Similar to 4X games but on a larger scale, often covering entire nations or empires. These games focus on politics, diplomacy, and military strategies.

    • Examples: Europa Universalis IV, Crusader Kings II, Victoria II.

5. Tower Defense Games:

  • Players build and upgrade defensive structures on a map to protect a base against waves of enemy attacks known as "creeps".

    • Examples: Plants vs. Zombies, Element TD 2, Legion TD 2, Defense Grid: The Awakening.

6. Real-Time Tactics (RTT):

  • Focuses on tactical combat with smaller groups of units, often with an emphasis on positioning and terrain.

    • Examples: Company of Heroes, Total War series, World in Conflict.

7. Turn-Based Tactics (TBT):

  • Tactical combat games with grid-based movement and strategic positioning to defeat scenarios or free play.

    • Examples: Fire Emblem series, Advance Wars, Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics

8. Card-Based Strategy Games:

  • Combines card game mechanics with strategic elements, where players build decks and battle it out to see who built the best deck.

    • Examples: Hearthstone, Slay the Spire, Gwent, MTGA

9. Roguelike Strategy Games:

  • Strategy games with roguelike elements, where you play in "runs", gaining benefits as you go that can improve the current and following runs.

    • Examples: Into the Breach, FTL: Faster Than Light, Darkest Dungeon.

10. War Games:

  • Simulate historical or fictional warfare, often with detailed military strategies.

    • Examples: Total War series, Hearts of Iron IV

11. Hybrid Strategy Games:

  • Combine elements of different strategy subgenres to create unique gameplay experiences.

    • Examples: Sins of a Solar Empire (RTS/4X), Endless Space (4X/RTS), Civilization: Beyond Earth (4X/City-Building).

12. MOBA(Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) Games:

  • Combine elements of Team strategy and action. MOBA games are characterized by team-based competition, where two teams of players, often consisting of five members each, face off on a symmetrical map. The primary objective is to work together with your team to achieve victory by destroying your opponent's base.

    • Examples: League of Legends, Dota 2

12. Auto-Battler Games:

  • Combine elements of strategy, tactics, and team building with automated battles. The core gameplay revolves around assembling a team of units or heroes and then pitting them against opponents in automated battles.

    • Examples: Auto Chess, Teamfight Tactics (TFT), Hearthstone Battlegrounds

RTS Game Theory/Guide Part 1

RTS Game Theory: Multitasking Real Time Strategy games get their appeal from, well, the real time tactics. The thrill and suspense of split-decision making and constant action as you face off against the AI or other players make real time strategy games different from the other strategy games in the genre; it adds a whole other level of complexity in of itself. In this RTS Game Theory section, we are going to look at Multitasking . You may have tried an RTS for the first time and as you were learning the ropes for what building is what, you get attacked with a large force from an enemy. You go to move your army and…wait…you have one soldier just standing idly to face the threat. You were so focused on the economy, you forgot about your military. We have all been there. This frustration of everything going on at once can easily lead to frustration and quitting RTS games all together. Let’s break it down to an organized, manageable problem. The most common way to manage multitaskin...

RTS Game Theory/Guide Part 2: Resource Management

RTS Game Theory/Guide: Resource Management This is a deeper look at how to manage resources, but because this game theory/guide is for all RTS games, it won’t be a deep dive into any one game specifically. I recommend doing some research on your own for specifics. As previously mentioned, resources are the supply for the demand(military). Having a great economy will field a great army. Let's break this down into separate categories: Resource Types:   Most RTS games feature multiple types of resources, such as minerals, energy, food, gold, or wood. Understanding the different types and their uses is crucial. Buildings, units, and research all have specific costs of one or multiple of these resources. Depending on what you want to build, you need to allocate your workers to collect that resource. For example, if you need to train an army consisting of high cost gold units, you will need to collect more gold than the other resources. This may include assigning newly trained wor...
